France, a positive signal must be given on Ukraine’s candidacy to the EU
The French minister in charge of Europe, Clément Beaune, today expressed the hope that the European Union will be “open” to Ukraine’s application for EU membership. “I think we need to give this signal to Ukraine, to show itself open to this candidacy”, said Beaune to the microphones of France Inter, while President Emmanuel Macron is preparing to leave for a diplomatic mission in Eastern Europe, in particular, Romania , Moldavia and perhaps also in Kiev with Mario Draghi and Olaf Scholz, even if the Elysée still does not confirm.
On EU accession “we need to give a positive signal as soon as possible”, underlined Beaune, adding: “Then, I say this very sincerely, starting an accession process takes a long time. First of all, it is a country at war, the urgency is to stop the war, rebuild Ukraine, then make it join under good conditions both for the EU and for Ukraine “, warned the senior exponent of the current presidency semester of the EU which will end in fifteen days, next 30 June. Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia have asked to be able to obtain the status of candidate countries to the European Union.
The Brussels Commission is called upon to express itself on this request by the weekend, and then pass the ball to the heads of state and government of the twenty-seven gathered in Brussels at the end of June. The green light requires the unanimous vote of all member states.
