Ukraine: A quarter fewer agricultural fields strewn • Zelensky: Severodonetsk battle exacts a terrifying toll

A quarter of Ukraine’s agricultural fields are less fertilized than before the Russian invasion, said Deputy Agriculture Minister Taras Visotski. The decrease is not only because there is fighting in the country, but also because Russia is blocking exports. As a result, farmers grow fewer crops intended for export.

The harvest is likely to be enough for domestic needs, especially as millions of residents have fled abroad.

Certain crops, such as soybeans, have remained roughly the same in area, but maize has fallen from 5.5 million hectares before the war to 4.6 million hectares today.

Visotsky did not mention any numbers on grain. Ukraine is one of the world’s largest grain exporters and many countries depend on crop production in Ukraine for food security.
