Strong surge in the Mélenchon vote in the major cities of Val-d’Oise

49% in Argenteuil, 62% in Garges-lès-Gonesse, 55% in Villiers-le-Bel, 48% in Sarcelles, 48% in Cergy… In the largest cities of Val-d’Oise, the candidate of La France rebellious (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon turns largely in the lead, ahead of the outgoing president. In the department, he thus totals 33% of the votes, ahead of Emmanuel Macron (En Marche!) with 26% of the votes cast. The candidate of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, qualified for the second round, comes in third position with 17% of the vote.

Even if the results have greatly improved in the department, the failure of the LFI candidate at the national level leaves a bitter taste to the local representatives of the party. “I am very mixed this morning”, recognizes Véronique Danet, leader in the 9th district (Gonesse, Goussainville, Luzarches).

Disappointed with Macronism

In Goussainville, where Véronique Danet was elected in opposition, Jean-Luc Mélenchon totaled 52% of the vote, against 33% five years earlier. For the elected official, this score is “the result of a lot of field work by activists”, says the unsuccessful former candidate for the 2017 legislative elections. Around a hard core of about fifteen volunteers, door to door and the towing convinced the disappointed of the presidential party, according to her. “Our speech has really printed Macron’s reforms among the middle classes losing”, analyzes Véronique Danet, welcoming in passing the enthusiasm of young people for the rebellious candidate.

A feeling also shared among the militants of the 2nd district (Cergy south, Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, Isle Adam). For Sylvie Geoffroy Martin, LFI candidate for the 2017 legislative elections and approached for the next election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s program also seduced “retirees who have suffered the costs of Emmanuel Macron’s policy”. While a hundred activists were active in the Cergy conurbation, LFI recorded a 16% increase in LFI votes in the city.

Strong abstention

Even in the strongholds of the right like in Taverny, where the mayor and regional councilor, Florence Portelli (LR) is very close to Valérie Pécresse, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is in the lead with almost 30% of the votes.

Abstention remains, once again, above the national average. 27.8% of registered voters, against 25% nationally, did not go to the 811 polling stations. This is a drop of 5% less compared to 2017, when 2,500 additional voters were registered on the electoral lists.
