These are the cars that cannot circulate in 152 Spanish cities since 2023

What DGT label does your car have? This is a question that is becoming increasingly important, especially if you want to continue driving your vehicle freely through any city in Spain.
The reason is that, as detailed in the Transition and Climate Change Law, all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants are obliged to implement low emission zones (ZBE) before 2023. That is, in a matter of months. With these measures, the access of thousands of vehicles (the most polluting) to the centers of 152 Spanish cities is limited, as is already the case with Madrid Central or with the areas of Barcelona.

But, what cars are not going to be able to pass? then you can Check which vehicles are going to have limited access. Although, in addition to the general rule, each city council can establish its own additional restrictions and limitations on certain vehicles.

When are the ZBE going to be implemented throughout Spain?

The Transition and Climate Change Law gives all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants a deadline to implement this measure until the end of 2023. Specifically, all localities must have these ZBEs in force, at most, the December 31, 2022.

This new measure, which consists of implementing low-emission zones in urban centers that cars without an environmental label will not be able to access, aims to reduce polluting emissions.

The vehicles that cannot access these low emission zones in any city are:

  • Los cars that do not have an environmental label from the DGT. These are gasoline vehicles prior to the year 2000 or those with a diesel engine prior to 2006. As for motorcycles, those prior to the year 2003 cannot access.

This is the general rule that must be applied in all municipalities that implement these low emission zones. But in addition, the law gives carte blanche to municipalities so that they can establish other additional limitations.

This is what can happen with the cars of labels B and C, which initially can access these areas, but may have limitations. Parking restrictions could apply, for example, as is already the case in Madrid.

How many municipalities have to implement ZBE

How to know where the new ZBEs are

To recognize where these low emission zones are located and avoid fines, the General Directorate of Traffic has developed a vertical sign that identifies them. Below you can see an example of this signal.

Traffic sign identifying low emission zones

Label B is included in this badge, but this does not mean that access to all these vehicles will be prohibited. It is an image that serves as an example, but each city has to indicate at the bottom of the sign what the exact limitations are.

In the case of not complying with this rule and accessing with a polluting vehicle, according to the new fines of the Traffic Law, the drivers face a financial penalty of 200 euros.
