Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK in early June for Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee. But that will be the last time we see them in the country for a while, according to royal expert Russell Myers.
He discussed what happened during the duke and duchess’s first public appearance together in London in over two years, and how it was very different from the last time we saw them with the royal family. Here’s more on that and the “wounds that are still wide open.”
How many times did Prince Harry and Meghan visit the UK after quitting?
Since stepping down as senior royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan haven’t been back to the UK much. The prince first returned in April 2021 for the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip. This was a month after Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah, and the visit was brief.
The Duke of Sussex returned again in July 2021 and joined his brother Prince William to unveil a statue of their mother Princess Diana. Despite smiling for the cameras and revealing the statue together, William and Harry did not interact much.
The Duchess of Sussex had not returned to the UK until they had a private visit with the queen on their way to The Hague, the Netherlands, for the Invictus Games in April 2022.
Expert says the Duke and Duchess won’t be back anytime soon because ‘the wounds are open’
Myers thinks we can expect to see even less of Harry and Meghan for quite some time because their Jubilee visit showed how fresh the wounds are in the family. The royal expert appeared on the British morning show. lorraine to discuss the Sussexes’ appearance.
“Harry and Meghan kept a very low profile. They got to things that they had to get to, but, you know, that’s what they were asked to do, and they did,” Lorraine said (per Express).
Myers agreed, replying, “They did, they didn’t cause a stir. They said they would just sit in the back. It’s very interesting because when I was in St Paul’s Cathedral, there could have been a lot of talk about whether William or Charles had given them a wink or a nod. And they didn’t. They had no eye contact.”
He continued: “Harry was sort of craning his neck to make eye contact with William. I felt that he was quite sad. We only saw them very, very briefly though, they really missed out on all the fun. So will we see them again? I don’t think about the near future. I definitely still think the wounds are wide open.”
The Sussexes did not seem happy with their demotion and the reception they received.
This appearance marked the first time the public had been able to see the Sussexes at an event where they weren’t working as royals, and it was a stark contrast to how things used to be.
The couple, who once held prominent positions with other royals, were relegated to the opposite side of the cathedral for the thanksgiving service. Their degradation became even clearer when they sat in the second row. Although these things were expected, neither Meghan nor Harry seemed particularly happy about it.
Outside the church, the duke and duchess tried to control their reaction when they heard a mix of cheers and jeers. But at the time, as many royal observers have pointed out, they could not entirely hide the disappointment on their faces.
