Tortilleros de Sinaloa report low quality corn due to lack of irrigation

Due to lack of irrigation, the corn did not have the quality that was expected, reported the president of the Federation of Industrialists of the Dough and Tortilla of Sinaloa, Rafael Uriarte Quiroz, who said he was concerned about such a situation.

“There is an alarm, quite worrying because the corn was not of the quality to which we are really accustomed due to lack of water, even, they lacked one or two irrigations, certain sectors did not have the water that was used, so, there was not that performance that was concerned and that quality that we are used to”, he said.

He clarified that not all the corn purchased has been of lower quality, however, it has been reflected in the yields that the restrictions on water for irrigation did harm the product, since in previous years corn production was effective.

“Not all of them, there was quality, there was yield, but not like last year, the ancestor that there was enough water for irrigation and that the corn was grown efficiently,” he explained.

Regarding the scarcity of water in the entity, Uriarte Quiroz assured that tortilla production has not been affected by said problem, since not much water is required.

In addition to this, he pointed out that those who are harmed by the lack of water are the producers in the south of the country who use it to nixtamalize corn.

“Here in Sinaloa we don’t have that problem, the problem is where nixtamalizes in Oaxaca, Chiapas in that area of Mexico that nixtamalizes 70-80 percent, we don’t have that problem, consumption is minimal, until now we haven’t had that problem “, held.

It should be remembered that, at the beginning of May, when corn threshing was beginning, some producers were concerned about the possible negative effects that the grains could have due to the lack of irrigation and fertilization.

Such is the case of Marte Vega Román, president of the Confederation of Agricultural Associations of the State of Sinaloa, who pointed out that lower yields were being recorded in the first threshing, compared to other years.

For his part, Agustín Espinoza Lagunas, coordinator of the Permanent Agrarian Congress in Sinaloa, revealed that losses were being recorded due to the lack of water and fertilizers, however, these were not considerable.
