Christian Horner is pleased with the performance of Max Verstappen and teammate Sergio Pérez during qualifying for the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan. According to the Red Bull Racing team boss, pole position was simply not possible.
Verstappen will start the race in Baku on Sunday from third place, behind Ferrari pole sitter Charles Leclerc and teammate Pérez. The Dutchman has only been on pole position once this season.
“With the many incidents and yellow flags it is difficult to get through the sessions here, but both drivers managed to get the most out of the car during their runs in Q3,” said Horner after qualifying.
“Checo had a small problem while refueling ahead of the third qualifying leg. This caused him to go out a little later than planned, but again he put in a very strong and clean lap.”
“And Max is very close behind it. Ferrari had a small advantage over a single lap, but on a track where you can overtake we are fine with second and third place. It should be an exciting race.”
For Verstappen, who was not really satisfied with his qualifying himself, it was the second time in a row that he finished behind Pérez in qualifying. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 1 p.m. (Dutch time).
