In the US, an economic mission from our country is on its last legs. Princess Astrid – who led the mission – and the various ministers who took part look back with satisfaction. Federal Minister for Foreign Trade David Clarinval speaks of a “successful campaign”. Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon also talks about a “successful mission”.
The Flemish export agency Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) already sees that investment projects from the US, but also from Japan, among others, are on the way. While this has mainly happened in research and development in recent years, investments in production are now also on the way. “We haven’t seen that since the 1960s,” said Strybol. It concerns investment projects in life sciences and climate technology. For example, the American company Plug announced this week an investment of almost 300 million euros in a green hydrogen factory in the port of Antwerp.

Attractive again
The FIT representative sees that Flanders is once again becoming attractive for American companies. “There is a lot of money available from American companies, and they are looking for growth in Europe. And if you look at Europe, Flanders is a good choice.” This is not only due to our location, but there is also the presence of talent and research institutes such as the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology, VITO or Imec.
The mission in the US was the last for FIT CEO Claire Tillekaerts, who is retiring. She will have participated in 97 missions.
