San José, June 11 (EFE) .- The World Bank (WB) reported this Saturday that it approved a credit for 120 million dollars to Costa Rica for the purchase of vaccines against covid-19.
The entity detailed in a statement that up to 75% of the credit can be used as retroactive financing for the purchase of vaccines already made, and the rest will be used for future purchases.
The goal is to “increase vaccination coverage against covid-19 to protect lives, ensure a sustained and safe reopening, and help reduce the socioeconomic and fiscal burden of the pandemic,” the World Bank said.
“Costa Rica’s health outcomes are among the best in Latin America and the country’s social policies have resulted in sustained investments in human capital, but the pandemic increased poverty and unemployment rates. This financing will provide essential resources to save and protect lives and to support recovery and economic growth,” said the World Bank representative for Costa Rica and El Salvador, Oscar Avalle.
For his part, the Costa Rican Minister of Finance, Nogui Acosta, said that “in an environment of low growth associated with economic and geopolitical risks, we will be able to use these resources to generate economic growth.”
“Through this credit, the country will be able to guarantee greater protection for the population, as well as strengthen the efforts that we carry out to ensure the economic reactivation that is so much required,” he said.
Currently, Costa Rica has coverage of 86% of the country’s total population with the first dose of the vaccine; 80.2% with the second dose, 44.5% with the third and 2.7% with the fourth.
As of May 30, this country of 5.1 million inhabitants records 904,934 cases of covid-19 and 8,525 deaths throughout the pandemic. EFE
