Soccer. The University of Caen champion of France: “it’s magnificent!”

Champions! The STAPS students from the University of Caen accomplished their mission by becoming champions of France, this Thursday, June 9, 2022 in Montbéliard. The day after their complicated victory against Nanterre (2-1), they beat Marseille with style in the final (3-1).

Like the day before, Caen however ran after the score in this final meeting. “We had a lot of chances in the first half but we couldn’t convert them,” says young coach Benjamin Briand. Conversely, Marseille’s only incursion hit the bull’s eye…” The Normans, however, responded very quickly to the opener of the Provençal score. Kévin Quénéa, the ASPTT Caen player, scored the equalizer with a cross shot before half-time.

“A Golden Group”

Reassured, the Caennais continued their undermining work in the second half and it was again Kévin Quénéa who made the difference. His head “filoche”, as he puts it so well, and the Caen team took the lead. The Saint-Lois Paul Leherpeur, already decisive the day before, split the third goal.

We were able to come back to the score during the two games, which shows our self-sacrifice and our solidarity. It’s a golden group that has made the difference in adversity.

The Normans claim to have “never doubted” throughout this competition crossed in joy and good humor. “What we have done is magnificent, emphasizes Kévin Quénéa. When we play football, we hope to be able to experience and share these emotions. »

In N1 next season

For the people of Caen, the pleasure is increased tenfold. “With the guys, we formed an incredible group”, appreciates Benjamin Briand. A group however deprived of the European qualification which falls, normally, to the champion of France. Caen was playing in National 2, but only the French N1 champion is invited to the European scene.

It’s a shame because the levels are close and it was a choice of the University of Caen, to reduce costs, to be demoted to N2. But it’s already superb what we’ve done.

Caen should accept the promotion reserved for the four teams qualified for the final square, and thus evolve in National 1 next season. It will be with a half-renewed group since many students will leave for a Master’s degree to other horizons. All the more reason to celebrate with dignity the end of a superb adventure.
