In June, the exhibition “Crafting Fashion for Possible Futures” opened at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York. Several promising designers are the focus of the show and can be admired there until September 8, 2022.
Curated by Camille Boyer and Miriam Kathrein for the Austrian Fashion Association, the exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of contemporary Austrian fashion design, which deals with its responsibility in the socio-political, socio-cultural and socio-economic areas. In their work, the fashion designers research and examine fields such as identity politics, activism, sustainability or the interdependence of traditional production processes and new technologies.
Participating fashion designers and labels include Alessandro Santi, Anna Menecia Antenete Hambira with her label amaaena, Dead White Men’s Clothes (DWMC) by designer Jojo Gronostay, Flora Miranda, the label ‘House of the Very Island’s Club Division Middlesex class struggle But The Question Is Where Are You, Now?’, Hvala Ilija, Julia Koerner, Kids of the Diaspora, Larissa Falk, Matthias Winkler, the traditional Viennese company Mühlbauer, Published By, Rudolf and Susanne Bisovsky.
All designers involved share the will to initiate changes through their daily practice. “Their actions create not only garments and textile artifacts, but also a social fabric of optimism, solidarity and hope,” the press release said.
The exhibition is organized by the Austrian Fashion Association, in partnership with the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.
