Hearthstone: Throne of the Tides mini-set review

A week after the release of the Throne of Tides mini-set, we are ready to make a judgment about the new cards.

In the meantime, it has been since April that we were allowed to meet the Voyage to the Sunken City expansion of Hearthstone and that means it was about time for a mini-set. This comes in the form of Throne of Tides, a collection of 35 new cards that can be bought for only 14.99 euros or 2000 gold.

New Colossal minions

One of the best-received additions to Sunken Temple was the Colossal keyword. Cards with that keyword come with several appendages that are played simultaneously with the card, even if it comes straight from your deck. They therefore immediately make an impact on the game board and it was therefore logical that we would see some new copies in Throne of Tides. In this case, it’s about Ozumat and Neptulon. Neither are played very often at the moment, but Neptulon can be used in Big Paladin, a deck that we personally enjoy playing.

A Colossal that did make an impact is Xhilag of the Abyss. This Demon Hunter card was buffed with Throne of Tides and is now powerful enough to be played. In combination with Caria Felsoul you can even play two copies of it. This, and some new cards like Fossil Fanatic, have made Demon Hunter by far the strongest class of the set. Both Naga Demon Hunter (with the new Rush minion Herald of Chaos) and Fel Demon Hunter are played very frequently. It’s about aggressive decks and matches don’t last too long, which we can certainly taste.

Return of the Murlocs

Furthermore, the set ensures that Murloc decks have become a lot stronger than before. One card is responsible for that: Clownfish. This card makes the next two Murlocs 2 mana cheaper and gives you a huge advantage in tempo. Personally, we do enjoy Murloc decks, but it is almost certain that the card will get a grain. One less mana would also be strong.

Due to the power of the above decks, the new Elemental cards from Throne of Tides have not yet had the chance to prove themselves and that is a shame. However, Year of the Hydra has only just begun and they have until early 2024 to do so. The potential is definitely there as the meta slows down.

Final verdict

If we have to rate this mini set, we are absolutely satisfied with it. Some impactful cards have rocked the meta, something that is very welcome after a month and a half since the expansion’s launch. Because not all cards are (currently) playable, we cannot recommend purchasing the golden mini-set. In our opinion, 69.99 euros is way too much for that and it is better to upgrade the used cards with dust, a new feature that was added a few months ago.
