The CIVU (Center for Interaction, Visualization & Usability) regularly organizes lunchtime talks with various speakers, currently all events are taking place via Webex. The lunchtime talks consist of 20-minute presentations on CIVU-related topics, followed by 10-minute Q&A.

topic of this talk

Generative Music and Emotion

Report on a project and the resulting master’s thesis on creating polyphonic music by entering emotions into a graphical interface.

Abstract

In one project, an app was developed that generates melodies for a given emotion. The user specifies an emotion by manipulating the eyebrows and mouth of an interactive stick figure. The program then uses Markov chains and its own generative process to generate melodies that reflect that emotion. The generative process is controlled by implemented musical rules.

As part of the following master’s thesis, a software module was developed that generates a generative accompanying voice. This accompaniment module complements the software module that creates generative melodies. The resulting entire software creates generative polyphonic music.

The research question of the thesis is the question of whether the music generated represents the emotion set by the user in a musically recognizable way.
