At least ten GFT bags full of bread were ready to be thrown away in Sint-Gummarusstraat on Wednesday. Carrefour responds that it is doing everything it can to prevent such scenes. “We regret this incident and understand that this comes across as wrong,” said Aurélie Gerth, spokeswoman for Carrefour. “Nevertheless, we try to combat food waste every day. Everything starts with a good purchasing policy. To do this, we put various factors such as the weather, public holidays, nearby events and road works into a computer model. Unfortunately, this also never completely excludes surpluses. You never know how many customers will buy what quantity.”
To give these surpluses a second destination, Carrefour has teamed up with Too Good To Go, a platform that connects customers with restaurants and shops that have food surpluses. “We also work with Freshr, a start-up that recovers unsold fruit and vegetables to give them a second life, and the Schenkingsbeurs, another platform that brings associations and shops together,” says Gerth.
It is not the first time that Antwerp residents raise the issue of food waste in eateries and supermarkets. The Panos case on the Meir received a lot of criticism a few weeks ago after they filled five large garbage cans with unsold products. In a response, the sandwich chain acknowledged that it was “not a pretty picture” and that they were going to make more efforts to combat food waste.
