Kabul –
A famous male model in Afghanistan along with three of his companions were captured by Taliban who is now in power in the country. The arrests were related to accusations they had insulting Islam and the Quran.
As reported Associated PressThursday (9/6/2022), Ajmal Haqiqi who is known for his fashion shows as well as videos uploaded to YouTube and modeling events he participated in, was seen handcuffed in a video posted by the Afghan intelligence agency recently.
The arrests came after a video that went viral and sparked controversy showed Haqiqi laughing at his colleague, Ghulam Sakhi, who was reading verses from the Koran in Arabic in a witty voice. Sakhi herself is known to have a speech disorder which she uses for jokes.
Following the arrests, the Taliban released a video showing Haqiqi and his comrades standing wearing light brown prisoner uniforms and apologizing to the Taliban government as well as the clerics.
The video from the Taliban was accompanied by a tease in Dari language that read: “No one can insult the verses of the Qur’an or the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.”
On Wednesday (8/6) local time, Amnesty International released a statement urging the Taliban to “immediately and unconditionally” release Haqiqi and his associates.
While in Kabul, Taliban officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the arrests. It is not clear what steps Haqiqi and his associates will face under the Taliban-run justice system.
Haqiqi’s own family could not immediately be reached for comment.
