Americans are invited, Thursday, June 9, to a television show with dramatic springs. But it is first and foremost a documented return to a dizzying experience, that of the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, launched by supporters of Donald Trump to prevent the certification of the November presidential election. 2020. The House of Representatives Committee of Inquiry will address viewers and citizens, in prime time, after a year of hard work resembling a race against time in a headwind. The refusal of the conservative channel Fox News to retransmit this historic event reveals its importance, but also how illusory it is to envisage a national consensus on this subject.
During this year, peppered with leaks in the press indicating the progress of the investigations, the nine elected officials – including two Republicans – heard nearly a thousand witnesses or people involved. Nearly one hundred and twenty thousand material elements have been accumulated, from SMS messages to the notes produced at the White House. The whole draws the contours of an attempted coup d’etat which shook American democracy. In other words, a conspiracy “extremely broad, extremely well organized”, in the words of Liz Cheney, elected Republican from Wyoming and vice chair of the commission.
Thursday’s audition is the first in a series of six, which will take place throughout June. To ensure the effectiveness of the device, James Goldston, former president of the chain ABC News, intervened as an adviser. The commission seeks to overcome the erosion of public sensitivity towards the January 6 assault, and to convince of the extent of the premeditation: from the small circle around the president to elected Republicans in Congress, passing by the big arms on the ground.

Video clips of hearings should be broadcast, including those of Ivanka Trump, daughter of the ex-president, and her husband, Jared Kushner, as former advisers to Donald Trump. One of the questions concerns the three hours during which the former leader watched the attack in front of the television, without reacting. The commission should also highlight the pressure exerted by Donald Trump’s entourage on elected officials – as in Georgia – to rig the result of the ballot and then prevent its certification by Congress.
