ABU DHABI, 8th June, 2022 (WAM) — The National Meteorological Center (NCM), through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science, has organized a solicitation workshop to discuss avenues of research and establish guidelines for proposals for the 5th cycle of the program in 2023.
The two-day event provided an opportunity to discuss a series of promising new research areas as an important step in the programme’s next call for new proposals.
Featuring leading scientists from leading global and local institutions, the workshop featured sessions that explored the potential for identifying knowledge and science gaps in the full life cycle of precipitation from cloud to ground, from new approaches and technologies for rain enhancement and efforts to translate new research results and technologies developed by program winners into operations and practical applications.
The Director of the National Meteorological Center (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association II (Asia), Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, and the Director of the UAE Research Program for the Science of the improvement of the rain, Alya Al Mazroui, welcomed the participants.
Dr Al Mandous said: “Since its inception under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the program has become a leading international focal point for the development of solutions breakthroughs and new technologies in cloud seeding research”.
“As investment and support for innovation is a national strategic priority, the 5th cycle of the program will help generate exciting new ideas that could have global impact. Three areas of research have been identified after an in-depth review of progress to today and future research priorities,” added Al Mandous.
The expected outcome of the workshop is a new solicitation document that identifies future research priorities to be endorsed by the program’s Strategic Steering Committee (SDC) as well as the program secretariat and international, local and NCM experts. The new solicitation document will be shared publicly in mid-October 2022 as part of the call for submissions of research proposals for the 5th cycle.
Commenting on the workshop, Al Mazroui said, “We are working hard to build on great innovative advances we have already made and harness new scientific and technical ingenuity that will lead to creative water solutions. , we have already made real progress both locally and globally, while encouraging global research collaborations that could lead to further advances in this important area.
The success of the program confirmed the status of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates as pioneers in the field of rain enhancement and as the hub of an internationally recognized research network.
