Flaviane Carvalho works at the Mrs. Potato restaurant in Orlando. When a family of three came to eat, she noticed a number of things that made her react.
When Carvalho’s suspicions were confirmed, she had to act quickly.
The waiter therefore wrote a “secret” note, which would later prove to save the life of an eleven-year-old boy, according to the local newspaper Orlando Sentinel.

– Something that did not agree
It started as a normal working day for Carvalho, until a family of three came to eat.
The family sat down at a table and ordered something to eat. When Carvalho saw that her son was not getting anything to eat, she realized that something was wrong.
Eventually she also noticed that the boy had several wounds and bruises on his arms. She realized she had to do something.
Carvalho stood some distance behind his parents and held up a sheet to the eleven-year-old.
“Do you need help?” It said on the note.

Could have died
After realizing that the eleven-year-old needed help, Carvalho called the emergency number.
The waiter told police that the boy looked like he had been subjected to violence.
Investigators eventually revealed that the child had been subjected to horrific torture and ill-treatment at the hands of his stepfather – including being hung upside down from a door and handcuffed for several hours.
“We would probably have talked about a potential homicide investigation if Carvalho had not intervened when she did,” said Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón.
On Monday, the stepfather was found guilty of gross child abuse and neglect. The sentencing will take place on 19 August.
