The argument that USB-C is a limit isn’t really that big of a deal.
Laptops (which this law does not require):
USB-C can already handle 240W…it’s not the power argument that’s a problem. A laptop can have dual USB-C power in it. We’ve already seen enough gaming laptops that work with dual barrel connectors + dual power suplies.
USB-C can also handle more protocols. The EU requires USB-C for power and that’s it. In other words, nothing will stop makers from developing TB5 and other protocols for the existing USB-C. … USB-C+, USB-C 3… We forget that USB-A plug has been with us for how many years now, and that it has just remained back compatible.
Smartphone/Tablet/…:
Wireless charging is getting faster, WiFi is getting faster. The pitch is more than high enough that USB-C will be the last physical connection on smartphones, tablets, and cameras. Just as 3.5 audio plug is starting to die out, people will start removing physical connectors from smartphones within about 5 years. Takes up too much space, not watertight bla bla, you can already sense the arguments.
In the past, an Ethernet port on your PC was mandatory because WIFI was a disaster in slowness. No longer needed for me these days. Wifi 5, Wifi 6, Wifi 7… And it continues to develop at enormous speeds, that I am not running up to the limits on Wifi 6 myself. Gaming over WiFi, no problem. Stream Gaming over the internet > WiFi, works surprisingly well.
We are slowly moving towards fewer and fewer physical connectors. And charging phone’s, tablet is that last port that will also disappear in a few years. This law is actually a temporary solution and it doesn’t matter that USB-C is mandatory. Manufacturers will simply start investing more in wireless charging and other wireless technologies (which are already well underway). Over the years, many connectors have disappeared. PS/2, VGA, Serial and so on can only be found on specialized hardware. 6.35mm audio that has all but disappeared except in specialized audio equipment.
No reason to be afraid of USB-C. Everything changes over time anyway.
