Chemnitz Crusaders are defeated by the Leipzig Hawks in a defensive battle

It was supposed to be black in Leipzig. It also went black – at least in front of your eyes, unless you are a friend of extremely defense-heavy games. Actually, the game didn’t deserve a winner either, but in the end the hosts Leipzig Hawks somehow managed to win the game against the Chemnitz Crusaders 8:0 (0:0/0:0/0:0/8:0). .

The defensive ranks dominated almost at will. Only three times – twice on the Leipzig side, once on the Chemnitz side – could a new first attempt on the field be achieved in the first half of the game. It quickly became clear that the smallest mistake would decide the game and that the special teams would also play a decisive role. This was first shown in the first punt on the Chemnitz side, which was blocked and gave Leipzig a very good starting position. But their field goal attempt was blocked again by the Chemnitz defense. This was then repeated again – Chemnitz punt with problems and subsequent Leipzig field goal attempt blocked. It was time for the half-time break.

With one or the other adjustment to the staff, we went into the third quarter and the defensive ranks continued to dominate the field. So a Chemnitz punt brought some movement back into the action.

Because this time the Leipzig returner managed to carry the ball right into the end zone. However, a penalty undid this. After this warning shot, the Chemnitz defense set an exclamation mark with an interception by Friedrich Förster (#22). It almost seemed as if this had now solved a blockage. The offense was able to gain better space than before. In the end there was a punt, but since punter Dominique Ittner (#30) took hold of the ball and legs after a rather unsuccessful snap and kept the attacking series alive for a few yards. There were 15 yards on top of that because a Leipzig spectator couldn’t control himself verbally towards the referees, which resulted in a corresponding punishment with a space penalty against the hosts. The Chemnitz offense knocked on the door of the opposing end zone. Running back Gregor Richter (#33) also made a breakthrough, but a penalty prevented the points. To make matters worse, the later field goal attempt also failed. The game time was slowly coming to an end and it almost seemed as if this game would end 0:0. But things turned out differently. Once again a punt from Chemnitz was blocked, Leipzig had an excellent starting position and the touchdown to 8:0 was also successful. The game ended a short time later.

Thus, the Leipzig Hawks were able to celebrate a happy victory, on the Chemnitz side you finally had to admit that you can hardly win a game with defense alone if not much is happening on offense and mistakes are piling up in the special teams. Now it’s time to check off the game quickly, because the longest away trip of the season to Wernigerode is already on the agenda for next weekend.
