GoFundMe Cancels ‘Fundraiser’ For Amber Heard To Pay Compensation

For six weeks, former actor couple Johnny Depp (58) and Amber Heard (36) faced each other in court in Fairfax. They had sued each other for libel.

The court decided to award Heard $2 million because Depp’s lawyer had said in a tabloid that Heard had created a “hoax”. The jury, on the other hand, agreed with Johnny Depp on the whole and ruled that Heard ultimately has to pay $ 15 million to her former husband. It concerns $10 million in compensatory damages – the actual damages being compensated – and another $5 million in punitive damages. The latter is a form of extra punishment that can be pronounced by a court. In the state of Virginia, that 5 million is automatically limited to 350,000 dollars. All in all, Heard now has to pay about 10.35 million dollars to Depp, which is converted to 9.69 million euros.

But Heard’s lawyer previously indicated that the actress can “definitely not” pay that sum. A certain Kimberly Moore therefore wanted to raise money for Heard. She set up a GoFundMe page and said she was in contact with the actress’s legal team. “I believe Amber, and social media protected the abuser,” the GoFundMe page read. “The verdict exceeds her net worth. It’s so sad he was able to get away with the abuse. The verdict promotes that abuse. If you can, please help her.” The goal was to raise $1 million.

But GoFundMe decided to take down the page after it turned out that Heard and her team were unaware of the promotion. In a response, GoFundMe said the page was taken offline before any significant deposit was made for the promotion.
