German trains overcrowded by 9 euro ticket

The Whitsun weekend in combination with the new cheap train ticket of 9 euros causes crowded regional trains and delays on the German railways.

Deutsche Bahn warns on Twitter that a seat on the train cannot be guaranteed. Many trains are also delayed due to the large crowds.

The police are present to intervene if necessary and to evacuate trains. Sometimes travelers are asked to disembark. It has been very busy since yesterday afternoon, especially in trains towards the North Sea. Bicycles can no longer be taken because of the crowds.

Unlimited travel

This summer, the 9 euro ticket offers unlimited travel for a month on regional trains, ie not on high-speed trains or intercity trains, and on metros, buses and trams. It is part of the measures to compensate Germans for the high fuel prices.

Around the Whitsun weekend the trains in Germany are often full anyway, but because of the cheap ticket it is now even more busy. Deutsche Bahn had anticipated this by hanging extra wagons on the trains, but that turned out not to be enough to prevent overcrowded trains.
