“The word turkey in English natural means turkey. According to the Turkish government, that is simply too painful. To improve the image of Turkey abroad, it is thought that it helps to get rid of that turkey association. President Erdogan has been advocating this for years and says that the original Turkish name can also be used internationally. This of course has everything to do with pride, it is an expression of patriotism.
I don’t think many Turks really care about this. But apparently it has been such a thorn in the side of the Turkish government that they have pulled out all the stops to make this happen. Including a flashy advertising campaign that you will see on the plane to Turkey.”
