Ring uses Amazon Web Services for the infrastructure, so no data centers of its own. The cost of storage on AWS is only getting cheaper, not more expensive. For my Prime video subscription (also from Amazon on AWS) I pay about 4 euros per month. It seems to me that having 1 doorbell online costs as much as serving videos to 1 prime user. This price increase is therefore won to ensure more profit.
Isn’t it also the case with Ring that you need a subscription to receive mobile notifications and the like when the doorbell rings? Not really an option other than not to subscribe. When the subscription prices are first reasonable and then increased, you don’t have much choice except to pay or replace the expensive doorbell for another expensive doorbell that does not require a subscription or is cheaper.
For the above reasons, I also deliberately chose not to use Ring, but a Ubiquity doorbell. No hassle with subscriptions and just store everything locally. However, many people do not know much about these matters, and so a video doorbell suddenly becomes very expensive without you noticing.
