Solariums as a money factory. It costs half a million, but it will return to you in 7 years

Solar panels on the roof have a hallmark of investment for rich or “green” fools. But as energy becomes more expensive, interest in them is growing rapidly. Hundreds of thousands of costs will be returned in seven years, says the popularizer of clean electricity Jan Staněk.

The Staňek family built a domestic photovoltaic power plant in a family house south of Brno four years ago. Solar panels now feed not only the entire house, which is partly heated, but also two electric cars. All energy consumption in a big house comes at low thousands a month. The surplus energy produced – just over a tenth of its production – is then sold to the distribution network.

“You have a money factory. He either saves them for you or earns them for you. This is a new phenomenon in the household economy. This year, thousands of crowns will be earned at spot prices, “says Jan Staněk in the Ve vata podcast, who popularizes clean energy on the Internet under the nickname ElectroDad.

He paid a total of 550,000 crowns for 32 panels, a battery and an inverter that converts direct current from the panels into electricity for common appliances. At that time, more than a quarter was covered by subsidies from the New Green Savings Program. At current energy prices, the investment will be back in a few years.

“Four years ago, the return was around 15 years. Today, due to high energy prices, it is falling somewhere to 7 years. Mentally, count on 10 years, “thinks Jan Staněk.

We wash and iron when it shines

In the podcast, Staněk modeled investments in small, medium and large domestic photovoltaic systems. The very basic one can be bought for less than 100,000 crowns, with second-hand panels even for half. However, Staněk recommends a system like his own, panels with a maximum output of 10 kWp to a family of four.

“Three-phase inverter, flashlights. The purchase price is 550,000 crowns, minus 200,000 subsidies, ”he calculates.

Watt peak (Wp)

Watt peak is a unit of peak power delivered by a solar system under ideal conditions. This is approximately the power delivered by the panel on a normal cloudless summer day. The output of commonly built solar power plants is given in kWp (ie thousands of Wp). The installed capacity of 1 kWp is able to produce approximately 1,000 kWh of electricity per year.

According to Jan Staňek, it is necessary to take into account that solariums alone are not enough for heating in the middle of winter. While in Staňky it will produce 1.5 MWh of electricity, in December it is ten times less. It has to buy electricity from the distribution network. But solariums will significantly shorten the heating season.

“In the problematic months of November to January, you will never use a house to heat photovoltaics. You won’t even produce enough energy to cover the rest of your consumption. The heating season, which lasts up to 7 months, will be cut in half, “says Jan Staněk.

Banish the boys with the flyer

The family adapted the lifestyle to when the sun is shining. “It is natural for us that when the sun is shining, we go to wash,” Staněk described. Several times a day, the application checks whether the sun is shining, but also whether an appliance is running unnecessarily somewhere in the house.

Companies that offer installations are now overwhelmed by demand. Prices are going up and Staněk would not speculate on their decline.

“In the middle of 2022, there is such interest in the installation that it will take 3 months before they come to make you an offer and in half a year they will come to install. Prices will fall, but it will not be until two or three years from now. In the meantime, the power plant will produce for you and will make you happy from day one, ”says a photovoltaic enthusiast.

If you choose solar, it will be the third big family investment for you after living and a car. Therefore, give time to choose a company that will install photovoltaics. Reach out to two or three companies in your region.

“When the boys who have a year after graduation come to you, read two leaflets and don’t understand it at all, drive them out with a pig’s step,” advises Staněk.

But what can companies ask so that the client does not fly? How do you calculate whether the investment will pay off in your house as well? And will your home power plant last for the rest of your life?
