The United States and Taiwan launch trade talks, defying Beijing

US Deputy Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi and Taiwan Minister John Deng met “virtually“and launched”the United States-Taiwan 21st Century Trade Initiative, with the goal of developing concrete ways to deepen“economic and trade relations, according to a statement from the US Ambassador to Commerce (USTR).

The first meeting must be held”later this month in Washington under the auspices of Tecro“, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States and the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).

Facilitate exchanges

Tecro represents Taiwan’s interests in the United States in the absence of formal diplomatic relations, operating as a de facto embassy.

The objective of the initiative launched on Wednesday is to facilitate exchanges, adopt “healthy and transparent practices“or to cooperate in favor of the environment or climate action, detailed USTR.

They also have “the intention to explore provisions to facilitate agricultural trade” or to fight against corruption.
