Turkey has officially asked the United Nations and other international organizations to change the spelling of its name to Turkey. This was announced by Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, quoted by DPA.
Ankara will send an official letter to all relevant international organizations and expects the name change to become official after this week, Cavusoglu told the Anatolian Agency.
The UN is ready for change, Turkey’s 1st diplomat said. Ankara is encouraging the replacement of the English-language name Turkey with the name Turkiye for most of its international correspondence, including in foreign media coverage, BTA reported, citing the Anatolian news agency.
In December, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a decree replacing the English version of Turkey with the name Turkiye in English, French and German, as well as other languages. Turkiye is already used in the labels of export products.
