A third too little EU money for climate protection

“One fifth of the EU budget will be spent on climate action”: This is the promise of the EU. The European Court of Auditors criticizes that this is not being observed.

216 billion euros – a fifth of the total budget of the European Union is to be spent on climate protection. That was the EU’s promise for the budget years 2014 to 2020. The European Court of Auditors put this announcement on the scales.

And found it to be too easy: the auditors cannot understand how a third of the money that should have been spent on climate protection was being used. 72 billion was up in the air; not 20, but only 13 percent (approximately 144 billion euros) can be credited to climate protection measures.
