A couple of young models go on a cruise and… everything goes wrong in a great mixture of laughter, blood, frenzies pushed to the climax which are also a vitriolic criticism of our society of money and appearances. It’s irresistible and it’s Without filter by Ruben Östlund.
Second Palm for Ruben Östlund
The Swede had already won a Palme d’Or in 2017 for The Square. And two! And, good news, it’s a film where we laugh a lot.
For the Grand Prize of the festival, the jury rewards two ex aequo. Close by Lukas Dhont, 31, very moved on receiving his trophy. Like with Girl, a few years ago, this Belgian knew how to film tenderness even in a drama, here the story of two preteen friends that life cruelly separates. In particular, we discover a very young and amazing actor, Eden Dambrine.
The other grand prize goes to Stars at Noon by Claire Denis. This story of a journalist lost in Latin America will not convince everyone, but Margaret Qualley, Andy McDowell’s daughter, shines there.
The Dardenne brothers rewarded
The directing prize goes quite logically to the South Korean Chan-Work Park for Decision To Leave , a somewhat complicated thriller that makes you think of Basic Instinct since the policeman is troubled by the ambiguous wife of the murdered victim.
Exceptionally, in this anniversary year, there was also a Prize for the 75e editing. It goes to the Dardenne brothers, always so effective in denouncing social injustice in Tori and Lokita . They dedicated their prize to the baker from Besançon who went on a hunger strike to oppose the expulsion of his African apprentice.
Two more tied for the jury prize. One goes to eight mountains Belgians Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix Van Groeningen, the lifelong friendship of two men. The other to the incredible Eo (hi-han) Polish Jerzy Skolimowski, 84, who gives us the impression of seeing things in the head of a donkey.
Best actor and actress…
The best actor 2022 is the South Korean in Song Kang-ho (that of Parasite) for the wonderful The lucky stars by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The best actress being the Iranian turned French Zar Amir Ebrahimi, interpreter of Nights of Mashad.
Best Screenplay goes to Tarik Saleh for Boy From Heaven , gripping thriller set in the halls of al-Azhar University in Cairo.
