ABUJA (ANTARA) – Nigerian authorities have confirmed 21 cases of monkeypox since the start of this year and one patient has died, the Nigerian disease control agency (NCDC) said late Sunday (29/5).
The NCDC said that among the 61 suspected monkeypox cases reported since January, 21 have been confirmed. One of the 21 patients with the disease, a 40-year-old man, died.
Cases in Nigeria are reported in six states as well as in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
“Among the 21 cases reported so far in 2022, there is no evidence of new or unusual transmission of the virus, nor is there any documented clinical change (including symptoms, form, and severity),” the NCDC said.
The Nigerian agency said that during May six cases were detected.
Monkeypox is a typical disease in African countries such as Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria.
However, the virus infection, which usually spreads less severely, has caused concern around the world after 200 suspected and confirmed cases were found since early May in at least 19 countries, mainly in Europe.
So far no deaths have been reported in the 200 cases.
