REGION – Engelbert Strauss wants to get even more involved in climate protection. The fourth-generation family business cooperates with the federal forest and preserves 1,000 beech and oak trees that are more than a hundred years old. The Engelbert-Strauss Forest includes a 250 ha area and binds the annual CO2 footprint of around 5500 German citizens.

In the North Hessian Federal Forest Service Schwarzenborn Strauss starts with a pilot project. The company protects 1000 giant trees as biotope trees and carbon stores. “Projects like the one with the federal forest open up ours Look and sharpen it for the essential things: sustainable Production, resource efficiency, innovative processing techniques, recyclable materials. Sustainability is growth. That should be reflected even more in our products in the future”, says Henning Strauss, who runs the company with his brother Steffen in fourth generation leads. So the two contributed to the symbolic Contract signing first results of this work, including Suits made of hemp and bamboo.

A special part of the project area is to be developed into a natural forest reserve without the intervention of forestry. This is how commercial forest becomes primeval forest in the long term. Strauss thus promotes the diversity of rare species and creates untouched nature. The wood of the giant trees remains in the forest and forms a habitat and source of nutrients as biotope wood. The plan for managing the rest of the forest envisages marketing harvested wood exclusively regionally – a contribution to the positive ecological balance of a local building material. The game killed in the area also remains in the region. A special feature: the trees are digitally mapped, and you can use GPS to navigate to the individual giant trees.

Christoph Goebel, Head of the Federal Forest Service Schwarzenborn, is delighted: “People are becoming more aware of the forest. The partnership between Bundesforst and Engelbert Strauss is just right for the forest – especially in times of climate change, the protection of old forests is of the utmost importance. Strauss sets an example and shows that environmental protection is successful when we reach people, both in their heads and in their hearts!”

Therefore, joint workshops in the Engelbert-Strauss-Forest or keynote speeches on topics related to climate, species and resource protection at the CI Factory location are planned in the future. Strauss sees the “Giant Trees” project as an important part of a cultural change that has been taking place in the company for some time. Corporate processes are constantly being adapted in terms of sustainability: from the supply chain to product packaging and resource protection.

“The project with the federal forest is just one example of our commitment, which we want to expand in the future. Strauss already lives a culture of sustainability,” adds Steffen Strauss. One of the central tasks of the coming years is to combine ecological, economic and social aspects.

“That calls for living values and a clear vision.” Henning Strauss concludes: “Strauss and the federal forest – that’s a grown relationship. Many foresters have carried the bird for decades. The forest is also the symbol of sustainable management. For us as a family business, this is the perfect partnership.”
