Need plans for Memorial Day weekend in the tri-state area? Here are some ideas – NBC New York (47)

Memorial Day weekend kicks off the long-awaited summer unofficially, and millions of people are expected to travel on this date.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) noted that 39.2 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more for those vacations. That would be an 8.3% increase from 2021, the organization said.

Although many will be traveling for this date, those who remain in the tri-state area will also be able to enjoy various activities. From visiting the beaches that open for swimming on Saturday, check out some of the best in our area here, to enjoying the return of Navy Fleet Week to New York City.

They can also enjoy a good picnic in these places in our region or enjoy walks in the different parks of the tri-state area.

And how about enjoying the stars at night in these perfect spots.

However, below we share some events you can host in the tri-state area during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

NEW JERSEY

  • GLASSBORO MEMORIAL DAY PARADE – GLASSBORO, NJ

Families can enjoy marching bands, puppeteers, fire trucks and much more at the Glassboro Memorial Day Parade. This annual parade will honor fallen local soldiers with a military dedication during a ceremony at the War Memorial in Town Square. Admission to the event is free.

  • Wildwoods International Kite Festival

On the beach at Rio Grande Avenue, Wildwood and inside the Wildwoods Convention Center. The event begins on Friday at 11:00 am with the media event Unlocking of the Ocean outside the Wildwoods Convention Center. Upcoming festivities include the opening of the kite sales shop, the Friday night social through the local kite club, and the 9:00 pm Lighted Night Kite Fly event. Saturday includes the silent and loud auctions (open to all) and Saturday and Sunday include the flying of large inflatable kites, team flying, as well as family games.

  • New Jersey Shore Food Truck Festival:

This Memorial Day weekend, Monmouth Park’s biggest event, the New Jersey Shore Food Truck Festival, returns to its normal date and size.

People can enjoy 35 of the most delicious food trucks on the New Jersey shore.

  • Memorial Day Crafts at the Museum of Early Crafts and Trades

Remember and honor our veterans for Memorial Day. The children will create paper lanterns in the colors of the flag. The crafts will run all day while the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The crafts are included with regular museum admission.

NEW YORK

  • Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade

The 155th Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade begins at 11:00 a.m. at 3rd Ave. and 78th Street, continues down 3rd Ave. to Marine Ave. to 4th Ave., and continues to John Paul Jones Park for a memorial service that includes Bag Pipes, Flag Raising, Wreath-laying by Veterans Service Organizations, a 21-Gun Salute by the Veterans Corps of Artillery, and tapping.

Fleet Week activities will kick off on Friday, May 27 with an annual movie night on the flight deck. Throughout the weekend, explore a variety of exhibits, activities and demonstrations including the US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, USO and even some vintage military vehicles. The weekend will conclude on Monday, May 30, with the Museum’s annual Memorial Day ceremony.

  • Play “The Shakers: The Story of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass

The Agitators tells of the enduring but tempestuous friendship of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Great allies? Yes. And sometimes, great adversaries. When the young abolitionists met in Rochester in the 1840s, they were full of hopes, dreams, and a common purpose. As they grew into the cultural icons we know today, their moves collided and their friendship was severely tested. This is the story of that forty-five-year friendship, from its beginning in Rochester, through a civil war, and to the highest government halls. They stirred up the nation, they stirred up each other, and in doing so they helped shape the Constitution and the course of American history.

  • New Britain Memorial Day Parade

The New Britain Memorial Day Parade honors all veterans and members of the armed forces who have served and continue to serve our country.

The parade begins at the top of Broad and Burritt streets. The line of march is east on Broad Street for 1.5 miles downhill south on Main Street for 0.7 miles past the Reviewing and Grand Stand in Central Park to the scatter point at Franklin Square in front of the New Britain Courthouse. The Reviewing and Grand Stand will be on the west side of Main Street on the north side of Central Park.

The parade features many local veterans organizations and their respective auxiliaries; local youth organizations, the New Britain Police, Fire and EMS Departments, the New Britain High School Golden Hurricanes Band, high school bands, two youth and two adult Fife and Drum Corps, a clown, Sphinx Shriners Motor Patrol, Sphinx Shriner Cyclists, Sphinx ShrinerFalse Alarmers, and many other local organizations.
