Moenchengladbach Borussia Mönchengladbach got a comparatively easy draw in the first round of the DFB Cup. At SV Oberachern, a top division club from southern Baden, there was great joy. It will probably not be played at the sports field at the Waldsee.
Special geographic knowledge was required on Sunday evening to immediately locate Borussia’s first-round opponents correctly. SV Oberachern comes from a 4000-inhabitant village on the edge of the Black Forest, between Baden-Baden and Offenburg. As the cup winners in southern Baden, the top division team, which is in 13th place shortly before the end of the season, qualified for the DFB cup.

BSC Hastedt (11: 1, 2018), SV Sandhausen (1: 0, 2019), FC Oberneuland (8: 0, 2020), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1: 0, 2021), SV Oberachern – the lots of the sort ” anything but a win would be a sensation” and “there are easier tasks” continue to alternate for Borussia. On July 29th, 30th or 31st, progress is mandatory, with all due respect for the opponent, who will most likely move for the big game against the three-time cup winner and not use the home sports field at Waldsee. A club representative brought Kehl and Offenburg into play immediately after the draw in the “Sportschau”, maybe it’ll even go to Freiburg in the Dreisamstadion or the new arena. The Breisgau would give the fans a nice trip, but the Dreisamstadion was not a good place for Gladbach in terms of sport for years.

What is certain is that the first round of the cup, like three years ago and a year ago, will bring a coaching debut. Under Marco Rose there was a narrow victory in Sandhausen thanks to a goal by Marcus Thuram, in Kaiserslautern under Adi Hütter Lars Stindl ensured progress. The favorite to succeed Hütter is still Lucien Favre, he was on the bench in the last first round in 2013 when Branimir Hrgota lobbed his penalty at SV Darmstadt.

Of the future first division clubs, only Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Köln, SC Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen are longer than Gladbach without embarrassment in the first round of the cup. The final in Berlin remains a longing for Gladbach. It will be 28 years since the last participation when the trophy finds its next owner on June 3, 2023. The victorious Borussia from 1995 met recently, celebrated together, visited the memorial on the old Bökelberg and the exhibition dedicated to their triumph in the “Fohlenwelt”.

Borussia have reached the semi-finals four times since then, failing tragically in 2001, 2004, 2012 and 2017 in a different way. Sometimes on penalties, sometimes against a lower-class club, sometimes both. The next attempt with the goal of the Berlin Olympic Stadium begins at the end of July with SV Oberachern.
