Travel ban for Poroshenko may prevent Ukraine from obtaining EU candidate status, – MEP

Member of the European Parliament from Germany, member of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs and rapporteur on Ukraine Michael Galer believes that the travel ban for Petro Poroshenko spoils the image of Ukraine.

In his opinion, this situation plays into the hands of those who do not want to see Ukraine as a candidate for EU membership.

“I am convinced that at this stage such situations should be avoided. Of course, these events do not contribute to Ukraine’s image abroad,” the MEP said.

Also, according to him, there are those in the West who hesitate about this, and therefore are looking for arguments why Ukraine may not be ready to even become a candidate.

“Such behavior and such practice clearly, in my opinion, certainly helps these structures and forces within the EU, which do not like Ukraine very much. And for now, I can only appeal to those who can stop this and release him abroad. Therefore, he must have time until Tuesday at the EPP Congress in Rotterdam,” the MEP stressed.
