Liverpool – Real Madrid 0:1

Real beat Liverpool 1-0 to secure their 14th Champions League title in club history. The Blancos owe this triumph primarily to their backing Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid crowns an outstanding season with the Champions League title. The Spanish champions defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the delayed final in Paris and took the European crown for the 14th time.

Not Sadio Mané or Karim Benzema, but the Brazilian Vinicius Junior decided the game in the Stade de France in the north of Paris. The 21-year-old converted Federico Valverde’s cross pass in the 59th minute and thus made the decision in an intense and at times spectacular game.

Liverpool, who had dominated the early stages, tried their best from behind but it seemed as though the intense past few weeks had left their mark on Jürgen Klopp’s team. Real were practically flawless in defense and Thibaut Courtois was there when needed. The Belgian keeper was the second match winner for Los Blancos alongside Vinicius Junior. In the 83rd minute he prevented Mohamed Salah from equalizing with a miraculous save. Courtois brilliantly deflected Sadio Mané’s shot to the post (21′).

Carlo Ancelotti’s team, on the other hand, put all their experience to good use. The midfield with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro managed to control the game better after the break. The trio, who featured in the 2016-18 title hat-trick, have been written off by many. Now it brought Real Madrid back to their former glory. Like Benzema and Dani Carvajal, the three already have five titles under their belt and thus the same number as their former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, which is a record for the Champions League.

Coach Ancelotti set a single record. The soon to be 63-year-old Italian won the Champions League for the fourth time as a coach after winning the Champions Cup twice as a player with Milan. With his home club, he also won the handle pot twice as a coach and now for the second time with Real Madrid. Ancelotti lost the only final in 2005, when Milan lost a 3-0 lead against Liverpool.

All hands in the pot: Real in ecstasy after winning the title

Record winners Real Madrid crowned themselves Champions League winners just before midnight – and gave Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC a very bitter evening.

28.05.2022

More than half an hour late

The game had started 37 minutes late for safety reasons because English fans had tried to get into the stadium without tickets, which caused some chaotic scenes in front of the stadium. Liverpool, who were clearly the better team in the starting phase, were not impressed by the delay. The Reds created several chances, with Mané coming closest to scoring in the 21st minute when the Senegalese hit the post.

Real was only able to free himself from the grip after half an hour. And the Madrilenians almost took the lead just before the break against the flow of the game. Benzema scored the supposed 1-0, but was offside. However, the ball came to the Frenchman from an opponent, which is why the goal could have been given according to the rules.

In the end it didn’t matter anymore. Real’s win against the Premier League runners-up capped an outstanding knockout phase in which the Madrilenians had knocked out three heavyweights in Paris Saint-Germain, holders Chelsea and Manchester City and had their backs to the wall on several occasions.

The kick-off of the game is delayed: numerous Liverpool fans want to gain access to the stadium

The kick-off of the final was significantly delayed after problems with the entrance. The game should start at 9:30 p.m., half an hour later than planned, UEFA said. The kick-off had previously been delayed by 15 minutes. The organizers initially stated security reasons, after which it was said that it was due to the “delayed arrival of fans”.

Numerous Liverpool FC supporters were not in the stands shortly before the originally planned kick-off at 9 p.m. Pictures on social networks sometimes show chaotic scenes at the entrance and long queues around the arena. The Real Madrid fan areas, on the other hand, were well filled. The AP news agency reported that there had been a number of incidents where fans apparently tried to gain entry without tickets.

The teams came out of the dressing room shortly after 9:00 p.m. and warmed up again.
