Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) warns of an outbreak of monkeypox or monkeypox what is happening now is likely just the tip of the iceberg. In recent weeks there have been 200 reported cases of the disease.
“We don’t know if we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg (or) if there are more undetected cases in the community,” said Sylvie Briand, WHO’s head of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention. The GuardianSaturday (28/5/2022).
The UK first reported a confirmed case of monkeypox on 7 May. There have been nearly 200 cases reported to WHO in countries far from areas where the virus is endemic.
Monkeypox has been detected in more than 20 other countries around the world such as the United States (US), Australia, United Arab Emirates and dozens of European countries.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported the number of cases at 219. In Spain, it was reported on Friday there were 98 cases and 90 infections in the UK.
Portugal reported finding 74 confirmed cases. Local health authorities said the cases occurred in men, particularly those under the age of 40.
Meanwhile, Argentina confirmed two cases of monkeypox. This is the first case found in Latin America.
Briand said it was still in the early stages and there would be more cases in the future. But he also reminded the public not to panic.
“This is not a disease that the general public should be concerned about. It is not Covid or other diseases that spread rapidly,” he said.
