Mexico City, May 26 (EFE) .- Mexico has 10.5 million anticovid vaccines available to continue immunizing people 12 years of age and older, but for the group of 5 to 11 years they need to buy them and for this it is already in conversations with the firm Pfizer, the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, reported this Thursday.

Regarding the current state of the covid-19 pandemic in the country, the official pointed out that the epidemic “is not declared over at any time.”

In a remote press conference with Mexican media, from Geneva, Switzerland, where the Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) is taking place, López-Gatell referred to these issues.

“Mexico no longer needs a vaccine for adults because with the amount that exists, a total of 10.5 million doses that are in our federal reserves with a perfect expiration date, we have satisfied our need for adults,” said the person in charge of managing the pandemic in Mexico.

“We do not have an excess (of vaccines), we are not at this moment in a material disposition to donate (…) and we have exactly the vaccines that we need for this stage,” he added.

He recalled that, for now, in Mexico boys and girls 12 years of age and older are being vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine and for this they take advantage of the AstraZeneca vaccines that were still available with a good expiration date.

He said that these vaccines are part of the original contracts and therefore the country has not needed to make any renewal, expansion or rehiring.

In addition, he criticized the unserious media “invented this idea that we had millions of vaccines in excess and that these vaccines had been spoiled, this is completely false.”

Regarding vaccines for girls and boys from 5 to 11 years old, he accepted that new contracts are needed, which they are already working on.

“Formal conversations for this contracting have already begun and we estimate that we have a quantity of Pfizer vaccine in the specific formulation for girls and boys from 5 to 11 years of age still to be specified,” he said.

Regarding the end of the pandemic, the official said that the biological, epidemiological and ecological characteristics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus “suggest that it will behave in perpetuity like many respiratory viruses. Perhaps the most illustrative is the virus o influenza viruses, that is, the virus will never go away from the human species, the virus will continue to be present”.

He anticipated that both the Mexican Government and many other governments and the global community of science in Public Health consider that “the virus is going to begin to have more predictable cycles (…) in the cold season of the year, from October to March, be times of regrowth; and in the hot season, from April to September, are times of recess”.

Regarding a possible fifth wave in Mexico, López-Gatell maintained that as long as there is an epidemic in any part of the world, “Mexico can have it, when we see a trend of change, we are already beginning to prepare for the possibility of a fifth wave, if it occurs We will report it, if it does not happen, we will continue to comment on the stable state of the pandemic.”

Until May 23, Mexico officially accumulated 5,758,597 total cases and 324,765 deaths from covid-19. EFE
