Eleven suitors for a single chair. During the 2022 legislative elections in the 4th constituency of the Gironde, the outgoing PS deputy Alain David (NUPES), 72, is a candidate for re-election. (See list of candidates below)
Located on the right bank of Bordeaux and bringing together the municipalities of Floirac, Cenon, Lormont and Carbon-Blanc, the 4th district of the Gironde has been held by the left since 1958, even before the birth of the Socialist Party.
“Before, it was the SFIO”recalls Bordeaux political scientist Jean Petaux. “After the Liberation, several deputies succeeded one another there between 1958 and 1997, first René Cassagne, before Philippe Madrelle and Pierre Garmendia.” The latter saw his ultimate mandate cut short following the dissolution of the National Assembly by Jacques Chirac.
After twenty years (1997-2017) in the hands of another socialist, Conchita Lacuey, “the 4th of the Right Bank” resists the Macronist wave. “It is the only one of the twelve constituencies of the Gironde which has remained with a socialist as deputy”.
A bastion narrowly saved, LREM in ambush
In the legislative elections of 2017, the 4th circo almost fell. “Aziz Skalli, who was the candidate for La République en Marche, himself from the Socialist Party, former deputy mayor of Lormont, really hounded Alain David“. This election has moreover “been marked by strong abstention from the first round, 54.21% in 2017 in the first round.
Another force present in this constituency classified on the left, the National Rally which knows “very strong progress”. The RN could be called upon to play the referees. However, as Jean Petaux explains to France Bleu Gironde, you have to have “well in mind that the rule for the legislative elections means that there will probably be no triangular, since the abstention, if it is as strong as that of 2017, will mean that only two candidates can be qualified”.
To challenge the socialist deputy Alain David, invested by the NUPES, the presidential majority chose a young 28-year-old candidate, Mélissa Karaca, unknown to the general public. “She is native, from Cenon“, recalls the political scientist. The real unknown of the election, insists Jean Petaux, “is to know if Alain David will benefit from the score of insubordinate France.”
