Gas prices are once again approaching record highs just as millions of drivers prepare to pack our region’s highways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in New York State is $4.93 per gallon, which is 17 cents higher than last week.
Both state and local gas prices are above the national average, which is currently $4.60 a gallon, up 12 cents from last week, according to AAA.
The same thing happens on the other side of the Hudson River. The average price of a regular gallon of gasoline in New Jersey is $4,761. That’s fractions of a cent less than the record of $4,766 set on May 20.
Record gasoline prices were seen on Monday at the national, state and local levels, AAA said. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.48, 15 cents higher than last week. A year ago, the price was $3.04.
Meanwhile, the price of diesel fuel remains high, almost double the average price of a year ago in New York at $6.52 a gallon compared to $3.23, according to AAA. Nationally, the average price of diesel is $5.55 per gallon.
AAA says drivers can save fuel by mapping their routes, avoiding rush hour traffic, using cruise control when possible and combining errands into one trip.
The agency also notes that drivers should make sure their vehicle’s tire pressure is at the recommended level to achieve the best fuel economy. Drivers should remove any unnecessary and bulky items from their vehicle because it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
