Pembroke Dock MP William Gannon has announced his resignation after many people have repeatedly claimed to be the world-famous street art artist Banksy, whose true identity is shrouded in mystery. Gannon said that constant claims on various social networks prevented him from performing his function and that he would therefore return to his artistic career.
In his resignation letter, Gannon called the statements that Banksy was ridiculous, and even had a badge with the words “I’m not Banksy,” which he now wears on his lapel, to avoid making another mistake. According to him, he decided to resign, partly because people “forced him to prove that I was not someone, and that is almost impossible”.
However, he added that he would like to welcome the real Banksy to his town and have him draw one of his pictures there. “Banksy is a very responsible artist and it would do a lot of good, imagine what it would do to our tourism,” he said.
No work by the famous artist has yet appeared in Pembroke Dock, but in 2018 Banksy painted a garage in Port Talbot, about 110 miles away. Tens of thousands of people went to watch the work every month, and the owner of the garage then sold it for hundreds of thousands of pounds (millions of crowns) to ensure its protection. The buyer then first exhibited part of the painted wall in a building in the city center and later took it away.
Banksy’s street paintings usually appear overnight in randomly selected locations without prior notice. The true identity of the artist has not yet been confirmed.
