The third dose, rejected by the majority of those under 50 in Albacete

Since the vaccination against COVID-19 began, 604,000 doses have been administered in the Integrated Care Management (GAI) of Albacete. Specifically, the director of Nursing of the GAI of Albacete, Juan David Fernández, stated that “the scope of the vaccinated population is 271,00 people.”

However, he pointed out to El Digital de Albacete that the number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 is not evenly distributed among the different age groups. The Director of Nursing of the GAI of Albacete clarified that “practically 100% of the population has received the complete vaccine schedule with the first two doses”, but the percentage of people who have received the third dose or booster dose is much smaller.

Specifically, it explained that “in the age group of people over 60 years of age we have practically 100% vaccinated”, and specified that “this percentage reaches 96% of third doses administered”, to people belonging to this age group in Albacete . Regarding the population group between 50 and 59 years of age, he revealed that “in terms of third doses, 71% have been vaccinated, while the complete schedule (first and second dose) has been administered to 100% of the population.”

Juan David Fernández clarified to El Digital de Albacete that these percentages of vaccination with the third dose experience a significant decrease “if we go down in age.” In this regard, he stated that among people from Albacete aged between 25 and 50 years “the third dose has only reached 42% of the population.”

A percentage that is more acute in the case of the age group of 18 to 25 years who have the initial complete vaccination schedule, but “the third dose has only been administered to 27%”, he advanced.

The wave of Christmas infections delays vaccination in Albacete

In this way, the director of Nursing of the GAI of Albacete highlighted that this situation may be motivated because “vaccination with the third dose has had less impact among the youngest or it may also be a consequence of that massive contagion that occurred at Christmas”, and that mainly affected the younger population, having to delay their vaccination. Specifically, it should be remembered that those who have had COVID-19 should delay vaccination for a period of approximately 5 months after infection.

“We have had a period between February, March and April, in which there has been a slowdown in the third doses,” Juan David Fernández explained to El Digital de Albacete. In this way, it clarified that the rate of vaccination with the third dose “has been increased at the moment” and added that “now those who passed COVID-19 during the months of December and January are beginning to be vaccinated due to the increase in infections that occurred during Christmas. Specifically, he clarified that these people “got infected just before the administration of this additional dose”, which is why they have had to delay this vaccination.

The wave of infections marked by the Ómicron variant during the Christmas holidays is causing a rebound in the administration of the third dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus in Albacete. This is how Juan David Fernández assured that this Monday, May 23, “close to 350 doses were administered in the Albacete GAI.”

Where is it still vaccinated against COVID-19 in Albacete?

The director of Nursing of the GAI of Albacete also explained that vaccination is being carried out “both in health centers and in the Specialty Center located on Calle San Juan.”

After the closure of the centralized vaccination point located in the Fairgrounds, it is precisely in this Specialty Center that “the vaccination of people at risk to whom the fourth dose is already being administered” is carried out, said Juan David Fernández . But he also clarified that it is also in this Specialty Center where “we vaccinate all patients in the province of Albacete who have had an allergic reaction in previous doses.”

The fourth dose of the vaccine has already been administered to nearly 2,000 people in Albacete

In relation to the administration of the fourth dose of the vaccine against COVID-19, he highlighted that it is being carried out in people belonging to risk groups “such as patients with oncological pathologies, patients undergoing renal replacement therapy, or immunosuppressed”. Therefore, it stated that “this is the population group to which this fourth dose is being administered with an optional indication”, regardless of their age.

Likewise, Juan David Fernández explained that those who are part of this population group “have a very low level of antibodies and if they get COVID-19 it would cost a lot for them to generate those antibodies again.” For this reason, clarify that “what we are trying to do is revaccinate them with this fourth dose.”

Specifically, it revealed that since they began administering this fourth dose a few months ago “to date some 2,000 people will have been vaccinated with this additional dose.”
