The Notorious BIG would have turned 50, and New York celebrated it as it should

New York City paid tribute to Notorious BIG in the best possible way this weekend. In France, the Eiffel Tower is illuminated for special occasions, in the United States, it is the Empire State Building that you have to look at. On Saturday, the top of the building was lit up in red and white to reference Biggie’s iconic photo, “King of New York.”

But that’s not the only thing New York has in store to celebrate the rapper’s 50th birthday. In Brooklyn, in the famous Barclays Center, a presentation of classic videos by the artist was organized. Also in Brooklyn, three subway stops handed out limited subway passes featuring The Notorious BIG

On Saturday, a birthday party was organized. A touching event captured everyone’s attention. As the event’s DJ began playing “One More Chance (Remix),” one of Biggie’s 1995 hits, his son Wallace picked up a mic and began rapping with the same intonation as his father. Junior MAFIA, Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Cease or even Fat Joe were then on stage with him.

The highlight of the show

Finally, the final event for everyone to enjoy is the release of a new Biggie track. After seventeen years without a new single, “GOAT” has just been unveiled, featuring Ty Dolla Sign and Nigerian singer Bella Alubo. This afrobeat-like track uses The Notorious BIG’s lyrics in the song “I Love the Dough”, his 1997 collaboration with Jay-Z. A very New York way to pay tribute to one of the best rappers of all time.
