The head of the ICU at Donostia Hospital affirms that monkeypox has generated alarm but will not cause a pandemic
The Head of the ICU at Donostia Hospital, Félix Zubiahas stated that the monkeypox “has created alarm, but it will not cause a pandemic”. In addition, he believes that the dimension that has been generated around this disease is due to the “fear and suspicion” that COVID-19 has caused, but that it is more of a “buzz” than a real risk.
Zubia, in statements to Euskadi Irratia, wanted to convey a message of calm to the population. “Before the coronavirus pandemic, these types of alarms already reached us and, later, they will also reach us”has explained.
“When a disease leaves its environment and more cases than usual appear, the health authorities are obliged to give this type of indication and health professionals must be vigilant, but that is the dimension”has added.
The doctor has highlighted that, with what has been experienced with COVID-19, the public is “more sensitive”, and considers that “a stir has been made that, in reality, should not” have occurred. As he has underlined, it is a problem that has to “concern health workers and those who care for the public health of citizens”, but it is not enough to “sound the alarm”.
