“We are talking about a mild disease, which is much less contagious than the coronavirus”
The Israeli Ministry of Health announced Sunday morning that a second case of monkeypox was suspected in Israel.
According to the ministry, the person who developed suspicious symptoms, a 32-year-old man of Indian origin, recently returned from Western Europe.
He was transported to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, his condition does not cause concern.
“We are talking about a mild disease, which is much less contagious than the coronavirus”, explained the person in charge of the fight against the coronavirus, Professor Salman Zarka, in an interview with Sunday. Kan Reshet Bet.
“It is possible that the virus has mutated, but its vaccine has existed for many years and there are also effective drugs,” he said.
At the end of a meeting on the virus infection on Saturday evening, health officials played down fears of an outbreak of monkeypox after confirming the first case of the disease in Israel.
The Israeli Center for Disease Control committee made no major decisions, but pledged to monitor the disease.
“It’s not an epidemic, but we have to raise public awareness,” said Dr. Boaz Raz, the head of the committee, according to Channel 13.
The World Health Organization said it was investigating numerous cases reported in other countries involving people identifying as gay or bisexual. Israeli experts have urged avoiding the topic so that the disease is not stigmatized.
However, they called for preparations ahead of Gay Pride events next month, which are expected to attract some 100,000 attendees, many of them foreigners.
