A new climbing site will see the light of day in the town of Viroinval this Saturday, May 21, the date of the official inauguration. This is located in Olloy-sur-Viroin, on the site of the Prosper quarry.
The preparatory work was considerable: the team of volunteers from the KBF, the Flemish mountaineering and climbing federation which also manages the site, had to clear an area at the foot of the walls, scrupulously comb the walls to bring down the unstable elements and finally mount all belay points. Obtaining an environmental permit was also necessary, as the site is located near a Natura 2000 area.
The work carried out made it possible to arrive at a climbing site with a height between 12 and 18m composed of about twenty routes, intended mainly for relatively experienced climbers, but also offering some great challenges to beginners. “Of medium difficulty, they require technique and continuity, rather than brute force,” says KBF press officer Annelore Orije.
To access the climbing site, an affiliation to the KBF or its Walloon counterpart, the Belgian Alpine Club, or to a recognized foreign federation is necessary – question of insurance. “This does not prevent an initiation to the activity from being possible through daily insurance that the KBF can make available, for example in the context of municipal requests or events for young people.”
