Steam deck put to the test: That’s what Valve’s handheld can withstand
The Steam Deck has really got off to a dream start – at least for Valve. The demand from the PC gamers exceeded the supply so much that even today some pre-orders, who placed their reservation right on the first day are waiting for their device – and that, although the handheld console has been shipping since the end of February.
But how stable is the Steam Deck anyway? Did Valve make sure the handheld survived some accidents without breaking? Or was the material saved? The YouTuber JerryRigEverything has taken the coveted console to the chest to get to the bottom of this question and relies, among other things, on the use of carpet knife and lighter – but see for yourself:
Steam Deck endures torture
The YouTuber puts the expensive 512 GB model with an anti-glare screen to the test. During the display test, it is noticeable that this special structure ensures that light reflections are reduced, however, the screen becomes more prone to scratches. After all, permanent damage only occurs when Jerry uses an object with a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale.
The YouTuber then scratches the plastic housing and the buttons of the Steam Deck with the carpet knife, leaving lasting marks. The only metal component of the Steam Deck case appears to be the grille cover for the fan.
The influencer then pulls out a lighter and Hold the open flame directly against the Steam Deck display for several seconds. This turns black in the corresponding area after about 20 seconds, but then slowly returns to its original state.
Colleague Severin was also able to get hold of a Steam Deck and explains whether the purchase was worth it for him:
Finally, JerryRigEverything tries break through the steam deck. To do this, he grabs the handheld on both sides and bends the handheld console with all his might. But the device holds up. Overall, the Steam Deck appears to have passed the YouTuber’s durability test.
