France to deploy Mamba medium-range air defense system in Romania

“The formation of battlegroups (Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary) is part of a broader set of measures taken by NATO to strengthen deterrence and defense in the wake of Russia’s war in Ukraine,” the ministry said in a statement.

It is noted that Paris has proposed to strengthen the French battalion, which is deployed in Romania as part of NATO’s rapid reaction force. It is planned to form a unit, which will also include the military of Belgium and the Netherlands. The main forces will be located at the training center in Chinku.

In addition, France will deploy an air defense detachment at the Capu Midia air defense training center. The French embassy in Bucharest clarified that this is a medium-range Mamba complex.

The French mobile air defense system SAMP / T (Mamba) is designed to cover the battlefield and important strategic objects from the air. According to open sources, it is capable of shooting down all kinds of targets at an altitude of 50 meters to 20 kilometers at a distance of up to 100 kilometers.
