Oscar-winning composer Vangelis, full name Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, died on Tuesday night at the age of 79. He spent his last moments in a French hospital, and his death was reported by the law firm that represented him.
The composer’s death is attributed to Covid-19, he writes Greek daily Kosmodromio. “It is with great sadness that we announce that the great Greek Vangelis Papathanassiou died late at night on Tuesday, May 17,” the law firm representing the musician informed the public of his death.
Vangelis was born on March 29, 1943 in the Greek city of Volos. He was self-taught, began composing music at the age of four, and was six at the time of his first public performance. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
In the early sixties, he founded the music band The Forminx together with his friends. In 1968, he left Greece for Paris, where he founded the group Aphrodite’s Child with his compatriots. After four years, the band disbanded and Vangelis began his solo career.
The well-known composer became famous for his electronic pop, but also for other musical styles. He won an Oscar in 1982 for his music for the film Fire Cars. He also composed music for other films, such as The Unknown (1982), Bounty (1984), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), Blade Runner (1994), Alexander the Great (2004) or El Greco (2007).
