Popes, friars, cardinals and teased in the goliardic “funeral” of Sampdoria fans for Genoa in Serie B – Primocanale.it

Thousands of Sampdorian fans, at the end of the match against Fiorentina, gathered outside the Gradinata Sud in via del Piano to start the allegorical funeral by way of teasing against their Genoan cousins, recently relegated to Serie B. they had done it eleven years ago, now the rite has been repeated in reversed roles.

The fans, led by a “pope” complete with “cardinals”, “friars” and “priests” in the role of concelebrants, equipped themselves with crosses, coffins and cardboard with a large B painted in red and blue to “mourn” the death football of Genoa.

From Via del Piano they continued along corso Galliera, turning at Ponte Castelfidardo to take via Canevari and arrive next to the Brignole station. Some slowdowns in the railway underpass, due to the smoke bombs that created a sort of fog.

Then the fireworks between via Cadorna and via XX Settembre, where another procession had already formed. Together they traveled the last crossing to Piazza De Ferrari. And it was there that the Sampdoria party began until late at night, to celebrate the salvation of Sampdoria and the relegation of the “cousins” at the same time.
