UN Secretary-General António Guterres is negotiating the easing of Western sanctions on the export of potash fertilizers from Russia and Belarus in exchange for the Russian side unblocking Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea so that Ukraine can sell its grain abroad. About it informs publication of the Wall Street Journal, citing diplomats familiar with the process.

According to the publication, Guterres asked Moscow to allow some supplies of Ukrainian grain in exchange for facilitating the export of potash fertilizers from Russia and Belarus, but the Russian Federation is not currently in “serious negotiations on this deal.” At the same time, Turkey expressed its readiness to participate in this agreement by demining the Black Sea and controlling shipping in the region.

Journalists note that the Russian Federation and Belarus are the main suppliers of potash fertilizers, which contribute to a good harvest in various regions of the world. At the moment, the export of these products is prohibited due to the sanctions of Western countries. In addition, the restrictions imposed have blocked Russia’s access to foreign currency, so a possible deal “will cheer up the two countries,” the material says.

The missions of the Russian Federation and Ukraine to the UN, as well as the Turkish embassy in Washington, refused to comment on the journalists’ information.

Recall, according to UN estimates, more than one-fifth of the world’s population – up to 1.7 billion people – facing hunger and poverty as a result of a full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the related blocking of food exports from these countries.
